Laser hair removal at Astele Beauty & Wellness is done on the GentleMax Pro Plus by Candela — a dual-wavelength medical laser, area by area, in 3- and 5-session packages with every price published.
The device: GentleMax Pro Plus
The GentleMax Pro Plus carries two lasers in one platform: a 755 nm Alexandrite, which the manufacturer positions for lighter skin tones, and a 1064 nm Nd:YAG, for darker skin tones and coarser hair. That is the point of having both — the wavelength and settings are chosen for your skin and your hair, rather than one laser being asked to suit everyone.
Each pulse is paired with the Dynamic Cooling Device, a burst of cooling spray on the skin a fraction of a second before the laser fires, which keeps the treatment comfortable and the surface skin protected. Larger spot sizes keep treatments quick — a small area takes about 15 minutes.
The GentleMax Pro Plus is a Health Canada-licensed medical device (Licence No. 75833), and the manufacturer lists it as FDA-, CE- and TGA-cleared for hair removal on all skin types.
How it works
The laser is drawn to the pigment in the hair. Its energy travels down the hair shaft to the follicle and heats it enough to disrupt regrowth, while the cooling spray keeps the skin itself comfortable.
Because only hair in its active growth phase responds, and only a share of your hair is in that phase at any one time, hair removal is a course, not a single visit: sessions are spaced 4–6 weeks apart so each one catches the next cycle. Dark hair responds best. Grey, white and very light blonde hair has little pigment for the laser to find, and we will tell you honestly if that is your case.
What a session looks like
- Consultation and patch test at your first visit — we check your skin, your hair and your history, then test the settings on a small area.
- Shave the area 24 hours before each session. Do not wax, pluck or thread for 4 weeks beforehand — the laser needs the root in place.
- The treatment itself takes about 15 minutes for a small area and around 30 minutes for a Brazilian; larger areas take longer. Most guests describe the sensation as a quick warm snap, softened by the cooling spray.
- Cooling and soothing gel after every session. There is no downtime — mild redness for a few hours is normal, and you go straight back to your day.

Before and after each session
- Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds and self-tanner for 2 weeks before and after each session — tanned skin changes how the laser reads your skin.
- Tell us about any medication you take, including retinoids and photosensitizing drugs, and any recent skin treatments on the area.
- Not performed during pregnancy. Bikini treatments are not performed during menstruation.
- Use SPF on treated skin that sees the sun.
Questions we are asked most
Does it hurt?
Most guests find it far more comfortable than they expected. The cooling spray fires with every pulse, and the sensation is a brief warm snap rather than a sting. Sensitive areas feel more than a forearm does.
Is it safe for darker skin?
The 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelength on the GentleMax Pro Plus is the one used for darker skin tones. The consultation and patch test at your first visit are how we set the treatment for your skin before treating a full area.
How many sessions will I need?
Packages come in 3 and 5 sessions, spaced 4–6 weeks apart, and most guests need a course rather than a single visit. Hair grows in cycles, so the reduction builds visit by visit. Results vary with hair colour, thickness and hormones, and an occasional maintenance session later on is normal — we will be honest about what to expect for you.
Can I shave between sessions?
Yes — shaving is fine and expected. Waxing, plucking and threading are not, because they remove the root the laser needs.
Is there downtime?
No. Mild redness or a little warmth for a few hours is normal. Most guests come in on a lunch break.
